Reducing Pain

Why do I have pain?

What is pain? and Why is it necessary? Pain comes in many forms. To simplify our exploration of pain we will divide it into two general categories: physical pain and mental pain. In reality it is not possible to truly separate pain into two categories because one changes the other. Pain and problems in your physical body may be caused by emotional pain; and emotional distress/pain can be cause by physical illness or physical pain. We separate them only in an attempt to understand them more.

Emotional pain is described as feeling stressed/anxiety, frustrated, angry, fearful, confused, helpless, hopeless, lonely, of put our mind on any negative, destructive, or uncomfortable thoughts. Like right now. Just reading and thinking about these feelings and events in your life that triggered these feelings has made you more uncomfortable than before your mind focused on them. As you know, but need to practice: your mind follows the thoughts, images, and events you focus upon. Learning to reduce emotional pain begins with examination of your internal dialogs and retraining yourself to replace destructive thoughts with productive thoughts, more peace, and more joy. It also requires some reprogramming of your view of past events, breaking the cyclical thoughts of "what I should have done or said." This does not mean we stop thinking and replaying past painful events; these cycles are there for a reason. All pain exists for productive purposes, yet can also contribute to our destruction. Pain is there to help us and teach us. A painful event is repeated in our minds to help us to learn from it, not beat ourselves for what we didn't do or say; but to consider how to deal with similar situations in the future. Don't fear them or think you must repeat them; start learning from them.

Physical pain is often pain we could have avoided if we planned for our future. Learn how to take care of your body, learn about better health and fitness. It is better to begin creating a lifestyle that will reduce future pain than try to reduce pain that is already here. Physical pain is normally a warning signal. Your body is attempting to communcate with you that something is wrong and you need to do something about it. If you don't know, see your doctor. Remember that covering pain with pain killers, alcohol or some other method is not curing the problem, it is hiding it. This allows the problem to grow into an uncontrollable monster with more power to destroy you. Don't ignore physical pain. Explore the cause first, then find ways to eliminate or reduce it naturally when possible.

How do I reduce pain in my life?

Look at it. As mentioned, listen to pain's warning, face pain to learn to create new actions and habits that reduce it. Understanding pain will help you find the causes, treatments, and cures. Begin by making a list of your most intense types of emotional and physical pain. Write down some possible causes and solutions to reduce them. If you don't know write beside each word on your list; "unknown" and "to explore." Know your pain better to change it's power over you. Looking the other way and avoiding to look directly at pain does not only make it disappear; but gives it more power over you.
