What is my definition of pleasure?
Before learning how to increase our pleasures in life one must be clearly aware of what they are? Most people agree that they desire for more joy, peace, and physical pleasure. But stop and think for a moment. What do you consider are the pleasures you want more of? List them in order of importance to you. Try to re-re-evaluate or even eliminate pleasures you have been brainwashed into thinking you want by those around you. First take a few moments to search your feelings and thoughts and write your list of pleasures in your life you will improve...(really do it before reading on). Change begins with even the smallest of actions. Include places, events, and activities. You may include what is pleasurable to your inner and outer senses. Inner senses here means your inner feelings and thoughts that give you pleasure. Outer senses would be: the sights, sounds, smells, and things you touch that bring pleasure to you.
Obstacles to Pleasure
As you know, there are many obstacles that reduce or prevent one from increasing the amount of pleasure in our daily live. You can learn about many of these such as: pain, peace, health, physical fitness, mind/inner-talk, self-control, and communication skills in other pages of this website. Without dealing with these issues more pleasure in life will be nearly impossible.
In this section we will explore and introduce you to other obstacles you can overcome. Increasing or decreasing feelings of pleasure will also be influenced by your moral beliefs, your character, experiences, associations, and other beliefs, (those planted within you by yourself and others). Your feelings and beliefs are often in conflict. These battles within cause stress and reduce your ability to experience pleasure at higher levels. Before one can deal with each of these, one must become more aware of them. Make a list of the thoughts, beliefs, and experiences you have that are obstacles limiting your levels of pleasure.
Divide and Conquer
Yes, it seems overwhelming, but by dividing these obstacles into specific topics to explore gives you the power to change overcome them. Of course, you must be increasingly aware of pleasure traps and time bombs. Short term pleasures now can become intense long lasting pain later. You can think of many examples of this in your own life. One must begin exploring pleasure traps, inner and outer conflicts; past experiences and feelings; to begin testing, experimenting, and finding what works for you. More resources and thoughts on these topics will come soon. For now, explore within, become aware, and take a step towards understanding you.
