Who I Should Be
Remember from Guidebook 1: Who Do I Think I Am? you learned that you can not choose roads on a map until you know where you are going. Before we consider what you want and what is success to you in the third step of your journey, think about who you should be. Not who others say you should be, but who you need or really want to be.
How to be pleasing to yourself and yet please others on a productive and healthy level? Loosing yourself to help and please others can lead to destruction just as being selfish eventually leads to destruction of self and others. We are not alone in this world, yet we need to be strong enough to think and act alone. Consider real friends. Real friends may encourage or criticize you but the end result is they help you become a better person. They contribute to your motivation and ability to believe you can reach your goals successfully. Wolves in sheep's clothing are those pretending to be your friends, (and often they really think they are), who are destructive to your life. These are truly enemies disguised as friends or delusional souls who don't know how to be real friends. It is best to not be around them, or limit their power to influence your life. There are times however, where there are destructive people in your life that you can not exclude or stay away from. They could be relatives, coworkers, bosses, or other people you don't choose to be around, but don't have a choice. In these situations one must learn to deal with them. People skills will be explored in our communications and conflict studies. For now, just start noticing destructive and productive forces within and around you.
Who you should be is a key to understanding what you really want. Who you should be depends upon what kind of life you want and what you want in life. Rean inner and outer change requires you to reconsider your values, current beliefs, and thinking that is not working. You may need to look closely and truthfully at what is right or wrong to you. These beliefs will empower and guide you towards productive, peaceful living or destruction. Just as one who becomes rich off the pain of others will never find lasting peace nor pleasure. Good things will be fleeting for them, lasting brief moments, and leaving them with more even emptiness than they felt before. Who you become will shape your future and create what you will have and enjoy.
